Wii U Annual loss

Post #1 by OverFienD » Wed May 07, 2014 12:21 pm

Nintendo has revealed lifetime sales of the Wii U sit at 6.17 million while announcing an annual operating loss for the third consecutive year.

The figures were revealed as part of its financial report for the year ending March 31, 2014. Just 2.7 million Wii U consoles were sold in the last year bringing the total number sold since its November 2012 launch to 6.17 million - less than the 7 million Sony's PS4 has shifted since November 2013.

The last quarter saw Nintendo sell 310,000 units of its latest console, which is a 20 percent drop on how many were sold in the same period 12 months prior. Its failure to sell is causing the company to lose money in both Europe and North America, due to a combination of markdowns and poor software sales.

The company's annual operating loss came in at ¥46.4 billion ($457 million) while the net loss was ¥23.2 billion ($22.8 million).

3DS figures on the other hand are more positive, with the company selling 590,000 in the final quarter of the last financial year, bringing the life-to-date total up to 43.3 million, 2.2 million of which are the cheaper 2DS version. Despite this, sales figures for the handheld still came in below predictions.
Its a pity seeing Nintendo struggling like this over the years they have come up with some good ideas back in the day. N64 analog stick which now is common practice for every controller around these days. Motion controller. Duck hunt with the NES Zapper. Plus the mighty Nes and Super nintendo. I think it all went wrong after the N64 they never upgraded to the right specs like the Playstation and Xbox. People these days on consloes want more power and better graphics from games, plus a lot of triple A titles sell consoles not just Mario.

In terms of expectations for the future, Nintendo hopes to return to the black with an operating profit of ¥40 billion ($394 million), with 3.6 million Wii U consoles and 12 million 3DS handhelds sold in the next 12 months.

In January, Nintendo downgraded its Wii U sales expectations for the year from 9 million to 2.8 million - they actually came in at 2.7 million. At the same time the company revised its expectations for a ¥100 billion profit to a ¥35 billion loss. As it happens, this too was underestimated by more than ¥11 billion.

In a statement accompanying the report, Nintendo announced plans to combat the Wii U's troubles with software that takes advantage of its NFC reader, along with the decision to introduce DS titles to the Wii U Virtual Console. It also referenced its longer term "Quality of Life" project that's expected to help the company diversify from games into health - something we've heard about before.

With the release of Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. on the horizon, Nintendo is surely hoping things turn around. Strong sellers from the last year include Pokemon X & Y, which sold 12.26 million and Luigi's Mansion 2, Mario & Luigi: Dream Team and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds all managed to hit the 2 million mark

I think it went wrong after the wii.. They certianly hit a niche market place when the PS2.3 and Xbox were true gaming genres. The N64 and the original wii were both marvelous ideas for basic inexpensive home gaming. The wii brought gaming into every home and living room with it's simple interface and original ideas that was fun for all the family.. but it didn't come up with anything afterwards that made the same impact.. and the big two took their slice. People always want more, and once tasted, people moved on to bigger and better. sad.. but business can't survive on nostalgia so this doesn't surprise me.

I was a massive fan of Nintendo since the days of the SNES and Nintendo didn't make bad games but I bought a Wii and it just felt a little too childish and nothing was ground breaking. I would hate to see them go under though and hopefully they can come up with the goods once again.
