My rigs thread.... Feel free to post yours !

Post #1 by ALXAndy » Sun May 11, 2014 11:51 am

Rig two is my Alienware Area 51 ALX.

Specs.

AMD 8320 @ 4.3ghz
Asus M5A97 rev 2
Intel 320 90gb SSD
2x320gb Barracuda
4gb Geil Extreme 2333 memory
GTX 670 "Jetstream" X2
Scythe Ninja
Custom side window
Custom side vents (Phobya)
1200w 80+ Silver PSU
Arctic F12s
Gelid cable extensions
OS Windows 8 pro

Rig three. This rig is my workstation, mostly for emulator coding, emulator design (graphical) and so on. It does game surprisingly well tbh. I built this one on the cheap, most of the hardware was donated. It's had an awful lot of work done. I titled it the TVR Sagaris, then themed it. It has genuine TVR hardware on it (badges etc).

So, the Sagaris. Spec.

Dell Precision workstation, dual socket 1366
Intel Q3NW prototype I9 (Westmere) Hex core @ 2ghz w hyperthreading.
16gb ECC ram
Intel board dual socket.
Corsair H100 (heavily modified) running two Nidec fans, 5900 RPM capable.
MSI GTX 480 Lightning OC 880mhz stock volts
Custom front panel (flip red/gold vinyl 5 coats of clear)
Custom inner front panel (modified and then dinoc 5 coats of clear)
Patriot Convoy dual RAID front box (the yellow thing)
Memory card reader (modded to fit)
Sunbeam Rheobus fan controller.
Soundblaster XFI Fatal1ty FPS with front IO.
Custom RAID box (old PSU shell) with 100mm Scythe Jyu Slim
DELL CERC Raid card (PCIX)
16gb Sandisk SATA 3 SSD (Windows XP)
8gb Samsung SSD (for capturing movies)
7x 320gb laptop drives
1x 500gb laptop drive
1x 128gb SSD running Windows 8
Completely custom hand braided PSU.

Windows XP, Windows Vista HP, Windows 7 Pro, Windows 8 Pro. I run multiple OSes to make sure the software I create works properly in every OS.

It's not finished yet, but, renovations on our flat (IE me doing it all) meant that I had to put it on hold. Basically it's going to get a custom bonnet made from smoked acrylic with a hood scoop (Mugen copy) to enable it to close over the PCIE power plugs. I've got the parts, and they're all done and ready for clear coat.

1. You need an Asus board, the more expensive the better.
2. You need a minimum H100.
3. Don't touch the voltage on the memory, leave it auto.

Other than that? the rest is luck really. I've had mine to 5.3ghz but not totally bench stable. If you want to find out if your AMD rig is stable use Asus Realbench 2.0. It really separates the men from the boys....

Nice rigs Andy, i like the psu cover mod youv'e done on the bitfenix case. Few shots of mine, not the greatest pics as im a terrible photographer.

Ive since routed the 24 pin and pcie cables through the grommets, added an extra fan at the top for exhaust. Unable to fit the reservoir bracket as my gtx 780 is the slightly longer rev 1 model from gigabyte. Braided cables are custom made using teleios sleeving. Made up for me by Davido labido, his work is simply stunning and very well priced.

H80 is OK. However, I strongly suspect your board is the culprit. With the FX 8 you really need 8 phases, I think your board is 4. This means that you're looking at around 4ghz I'm afraid.

I've managed 4.2ghz on a 4 phase Asrock board and 4.3ghz on my Asus M5a, but yeah, power phases are king.

If it helps any do your best to make sure you use the FSB as much as you can as it tends to need less voltage (and thus less overall TDP and better for a 4 phase) if you use it more than the multi. I've found that multi needs more voltage for the overall overclock and kicks out more heat. Put your multi back to stock, crank the FSB and when you reach the limit slowly, and I do mean slowly, start adding multi.

lol, if that's low its still pretty darned impressive. What was it capable off? Finding a good clocking 4770k is impossible now. Ive been scouring ebay looking for one but no joy.

It was happy benching at 4.9, wouldn't scale beyond that. Managed a few Cinebench runs @5Ghz, but the voltage bump just wasn't worth it. Still 14k physics (3DMark) is good for a 4770k i feel :D

It will do 4.9 with around 1.36v running 4 x 4gb CL10 2600 Teamgroup.

I think it's broke as temps rarely break 60
