I have an itch to scratch

Post #1 by Jam0r » Sat Nov 14, 2015 10:36 am

Christmas is coming, black Friday is coming, Battlefront is coming..

I can't really fault my 980, it's overclocked and everyone who knows me knows that I turn down settings to get more fps anyway, even though I do like eye candy.

However I have an itch to upgrade and the only thing I can think of is the GPU. Yes my 6970k isn't an i7 but with games supporting DX12 and hopefully making better use of the CPU in the future, I can't see it being a major issue if I don't get HT.

I won't touch AMD, everyone also knows this.

My reasoning behind the upgrade is perhaps getting a 1440 120/140hz monitor in the near future which I think my 980 would struggle with.

The way I see it I have two options, as is always the case.

Sell my current card and buy a single reference 980Ti. More VRAM, card vs card better performance and no worries about micro stuttering or SLI issues

Or I bite the bullet and get a 2nd 980. I'll easily beat 980Ti performance where supported and there should be enough grunt easily for running at 1440 but would 4GB VRAM hold me back at all? There is also the issue of micro stuttering and potentially the bottleneck that is my 4690k which will probably struggle sending instructions to two cards. It's happened before and no doubt it will happen again. On the other hand it's cheaper to do this, less hassle and as a bonus, I would have a 2nd 980 to mine (Bitcoin) with which means that I could recoup any costs back quicker compared to having one card.

I have enough money in my bitcoin fund to purchase the 980 outright so essentially it's free money.

Am I being stupid? Yes. But will it cause more problems than it's worth? Or do I sit tight and wait until next year...

Is the IPS panel Swift better than the TN one really?

I've had a TN panel before and never really thought the colours were that bad but the TN panel is like £100 cheaper

Whilst i havent seen the IPS swift in the flesh. Ive just started using the TN version. Gotta say that colours look pretty decent on it, got a few osd and nvidia control panel settings from Greg which really helped. For a TN panel, horizontal viewing angles are actually very good. You do notice a bit of a shift in vertical angles though. particularly on darker background colours. Im coming from a pretty old but high end at the time VA benq, for games the swift is light years ahead, feels so much more fluid.

If I still had the original swift, I wouldn't swap it out for the new IPS one.

But knowing what I know now, I'd been tempted to pay the extra for the IPS.

Hope that makes sense. :-?

Yeah that makes sense buddy thank you.

I'm going to be a bit radical this weekend and swap my 980 for two 960s in SLI.

With Pascal around the corner, i'm tempted to drop the 980, run my 960s in my gaming machine (I already have two mining) and see if that tides me over until Pascal is released.

That way I miss the drop in price of second hand 980s too

Will run some bench marks tonight when I get in

Well I'm a bit shocked tbh

couldn't get SLI working. Not sure if it's due to the SLI bridge being too small and touching he heat sink or whether the Zotac card doesn't like the Asus card.

So I've been running a single 960 over locked and it gets between 80-100 for at 2560x1080 with medium settings.

Think this will last me perfectly well until Pascal is released. Nathan want the 980?
