ESET NOD32 gets my vote every time.

If you want to try a paid one without anything dodgy from downloads you can try http://www.bitdefender.com/media/html/60-second/ its free for 6 months.

I however do not use one and if I did then MSE/MalwareBytes is good enough for me.

I used Bullguard for a year and thought it was the doggy's olbox. I loved how configurable it was and how it did not intrude on gaming.

The only issue was price. The first year I got for £6 on Ebay as a boxed product. Since then I've not been able to find it for less than £30 which is a lot.

It's a shame, because I hate now Defender and M$E just delete things and don't offer you the chance to allow them. Anything they don't like (loaders etc) are considered virii and deleted straight away.

Avast is what I used previously for free, it has really high detection rate.

I'm currently using Kaspersky Internet Security 2015, if you bank with Barclays you can get a free 1 year license renewal every year.
