Post #1 by nickolp1974 » Sun May 24, 2015 1:48 pm

Just got my hands on one of these boards and was wondering about northbridge cooling, not got the board in my hands yet but what i want to know is do you think theres enough room to fit my phase to the northbridge or does anyone have or know of a small pot that will fit??

You can use any pot to sit ontop of the Nb chip. I used to use a MickyMouse VGA pot for my board. Think I still have it mate.

I'd say so. :)

Although I'd play with it on air for a long time first. Mine could do 630 FSB easily on air.

Oooh. You've got a lot of fun ahead of you! :D

Your phase will let you get a huge amount of points from them too.

You're aware of how to insulate the REx on the back, right? I don't want it to go bang on you. ;)

On the back?? Please share your thoughts ;)
Was thinking of putting LET on the entire/most of the board, not pretty but these are fairly hard to come by now and i dont want to kill it!

A NB is very delicate, do not fasten down the pot, simply let it sit on the thing.

Cheers Dagmar, is LET the way to go with this board?? If i get any good chips that are worth pushing to max what else needs to be cooled other than the NB?

@jumper, i just went through the list at the Bot and picked all the 50 pointers, dont know if i'll get any though!

LET is good for insulating against condensation. You do at times want to insulate for temp too.

But with this board that is pretty much it.

CPUs I have a couple that you may like.

Last thing have you found memory for the board yet? 1.8v DDR3 if I seem to recall. :D

Ok cool thankyou, always up for some nice cpu's Dagmar. Board should hopefully arrive end of this week so i'll do some testing then give you a shout ;)

I have some Dom GT's (Hypers, Lewis said) will they do??

You will find out I am sure.

Please understand that the memory default voltage on that board is way higher than what they are now.

Go have a look over on the bot at some of the later submissions with the REX board and see what ram they are using. No point looking at the first few submissions as they only had a choice of three kits.

that is a very good way to pick them out. i just choose random ones which i could get a good deal on :D

Nick, the thing you want to be very careful of is the smoothing cap on the back of the board. They have a tendency to go bang under cold and pressure.

Insulating the front of the board as per normal is fine, but the back needs a little more attention. The safest way we found, after a number of blown caps (they can be removed, and aren't required, by the way) is to build up a layer of putty to the same level of the cap, whilst insulating it at the same time. That way, there's nearly no pressure on the cap, as it is all spread around the board on the putty instead.

Just a hint. I don't want you to pop it. :D

It's that big Fujitsu cap, under the CPU socket.

There's one by the NB too, if I remember rightly.

As Brendan said, putty the back until it's level with the smoothing cap is probably your best bet, you really don't want you backplate to be putting a lot of pressure on the cap.

+ The doms I gave you will be perfect for the board, you won't even need to run the volts much above stock if at all really to get decent timings up to 2000MHz which should be roughly the max of the memory controller on the board.

6-6-6 should be good up to 1850MHz from memory and above that 7-7-7 is fine. You might be able to get more with a small bump in volts but I have never tried the kit above stock volts which is nuts for me xD

No probs! I'd hate to see a REx die before you even got to abuse it properly. :D

Definitely test it on air on the NB first. My NB could do 600 FSB on 1.6v which was apparently very good. Don't be afraid to put 1.7 - 1.8v through it though.

Oh, if you need a small but high CFM fan to put over that area, buy an XBOX 360 fan assembly and put 12v into the fans. They shift some serious air and will keep that NB cool. :D

I don't have mine here anymore or I'd send the fan up your way. They only cost a few quid on eBay anyway. :)

Here ya go. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/XBOX-360-INTE ... 3a627a0789

Thanks for the advice guys, i have barely tested the ram tbh as i just havn't had the time but very much looking forward to it.
1.7-1.8v is that on air?? is the fusion block all connected to the rest?? Was thinking a uni vga block may fit??
I have some pretty good fans so should be ok there but thank you.

Whats a good binning procedure for the core 2's?? Just low cpu/ram multi and push the FSB up??

Which bios would you recommend?? 1202??

Are setfsb and setmem useful tools?

SetFSB and Memset are very, very useful! :D

It is connected to the entire heatsink assembly, yeah.

Yes sir, that is on air. It is 1.5v at stock if I remember correctly. They don't get very warm with effective air cooling, so don't be afraid to push the volts a bit.

Even with 1.8v going through it, and using one of those 360 fans over it, it barely rose above 30c in a 15c ambient room temp, and that was after running it for hours on end.
